![]() Testing the Chromebook Spin 514: Enough Puff for Getting Stuff Done ![]() Acer backs the laptop with a one-year warranty. (The mouse employs a compact USB Type-A dongle, not Bluetooth and thus taking up a port, and a single AA battery.) On the Chromebook proper, you get offers ranging from a free year of Google One (with 100GB of cloud storage) to trials of Adobe Spark, Canva, DocuSign, Dropbox, and SoundCloud Go+. Our Spin 514 came bundled with a carrying sleeve and a generic cordless mouse. You can make out overlapping tracks in your music, but there's no bass thump to speak of. Bottom-mounted speakers pump out enough sound to fill a small room, but it seems distant, flat, and hollow. The 720p webcam captures somewhat dark and blotchy images in the Camera app and Google Duo, though colors are good and there's minimal static. There's a small amount of flex if you grasp the screen corners or press the keyboard deck. But the Spin 514 is a peppy, attractive 2-in-1 that will satisfy many Chromebook shoppers and those who prefer its wider panel.Ĭlad in Acer-dubbed Mist Green aluminum (really, it's just a faint green tint barely evident in our images here) with chrome trim, the Spin 514 has passed MIL-STD 810H tests against road hazards like shock, vibration, and environmental extremes. Since list prices on these two Acer Chromebooks are so close (based on the $599.99 of our 514 tester versus the $629 of our 713), we'd still opt for the Spin 713, all else being equal. The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 (starts at $479.99, $599.99 as tested) is a more conventional convertible with a 14-inch touch screen with the familiar 16:9 aspect ratio, though its 128GB of eMMC storage and 8GB of RAM are each double the usual Chromebook allotment. Nine months ago, the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 won our Editors' Choice award for consumer Chromebooks, impressing us with its 13.5-inch touch screen shaped in a 3:2 aspect ratio, as well as its speedy solid-state drive instead of eMMC flash storage.
